HushMat, manufacturer of the easiest to install and highest performance sound deadening materials available to the automotive and marine industries provides engine cover kits to fit your in-board. Recently a customer located in Fairbanks, Alaska, took delivery of a Habercraft Jetcraft 2175XS. The initial readings were 100 to 102 decibels (noise level similar to a rock concert). Engine and exhaust noise, the jet drive, fundamental vibrations generated by both transferred through the aluminum structure. Harmonics transmitted through the aluminum hull and consoles. The first order of business was to remove the stock sound insulation which consisted of foil faced and backed one half inch bubble wrap glued with contact cement to the inside of the doghouse. Because the engine, compressor, and exhaust emitted a substantial amount of sound in the mid to high frequency range, the use of one half inch HushMat Silencer High Frequency sound absorbing foam was applied over the Ultra Mat on the inside of the engines doghouse or cover. The foam was applied on the inside of the doghouse with the exception of surfaces directly adjacent to the exhaust. After the removal of the stock bubble wrap the customer picked up the doghouse and tapped it with a hammer. It rang like a bell. After the installation of the HushMat products it was dead silent, no vibration or resonance whatsoever. The sound levels after the doghouse deadening project produced readings of 95 to 96 decibels, compared to the presound dampened readings of 100 to 102 decibels a substantial noise reduction of 5 to 7 db. The next task covered the inside of the transom, bottom of the swim platform, and underside of the rear deck with Ultra Mat and were rewarded with an additional 2 to 3 decibels noise reduction, a reading of 92 to 94 decibels was achieved. The current noise level reduction has made the use of his boat much more pleasurable for my wife, friends, our dog, and myself.
